Partnership Eyed With
State University On
HCVAs Assessment

MATI CITY, Davao Oriental, 30 March 2023 — The DENR-GEF/UNDP Biodiversity Corridor Project is eyeing a partnership with a state university here on the assessment of High Conservation Value Areas (HCVAs), or areas with ecological, economic, social, or cultural values of outstanding importance that sustain ecological functions, meet the basic needs of local communities, and preserve traditional cultural identities.

In a meeting at the Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU) conference room last March 21, the BD Corridor Project through its Eastern Mindanao Biodiversity Corridor (EMBC) discussed possible collaboration in the conduct of HCVAs in selected clusters within the Eastern Mindanao Biodiversity Corridor (EMBC).

Regenerative Futures

Dr Mary Jean Caleda, BD Corridor National Project Manager, together with EMBC focal Josephine Araojo and regional landscape planning officer Ryan Jay Labiao met with DOrSU president Roy Ponce and heads of various academic programs including environmental science, biology and agriculture to discuss and explore possible areas of collaboration.

Mr. Ponce said that the BD Corridor Project in line with DOrSU’s direction as a regenerative futures university. “It is timely since we are still undertaking measures to find our niche and establish our brand on biodiversity conservation research, innovations and extension among the other universities in the region,” Mr. Ponce said.

The DENR-UNDP/GEF Biodiversity Corridor Project aims to operationalize an integrated management of biodiversity corridors to generate multiple benefits, including effective conservation of globally significant biodiversity, reducing deforestation and degradation, and enhancing livelihoods. The Integrated Approach in Management of Major Biodiversity Corridors in the Philippines or BD Corridor Project is a Global Environment Facility (GEF) funded Project with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) as the GEF Executing Agency and Implementing Partner, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as the GEF Implementing Agency. Project sites are Mindoro Island and Eastern Mindanao Biodiversity Corridors.
