Info Systems for PAs, OECMs

Participants and resource speakers of the face-to-face Orientation Training on Information Systems for PAs and OECMs on March 13-16 at the Ritz Hotel Oasis, Davao City.



DAVAO CITY, 22 March 2023 — The DENR-UNDP/GEF Biodiversity Corridor Project conducted an orientation training on information systems for Protected Areas (PAs) and Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs) on March 13-16. The face-to-face training was held at the Ritz Hotel Oasis in Davao City with field application in New Corella, Davao del Norte.

The objectives include orienting and training participants on the features and uses of the Protected Area Information System (PAIS) and the Caves and Wetlands Information System (CWIS), as well as determining unforeseen issues, requirements and challenges that data managers and users need to address in the application of these systems.

Moreover, the other objectives include leveling off with the participants particularly from representatives of the DENR Knowledge and Information Systems Services (KISS), the DENR Information Communication Technology (ICT) focals, and the DENR regional Conservation Development Division (CDD) from Regions 4B, Davao and Caraga regarding their role in implementing and monitoring the systems and gathering feedback and suggestions on further improvement.



PAIS and CWIS

Victor Billones, Assistant Regional Director for Technical Services of DENR-XI (Davao) gave the opening remarks while Dr. Mary Jean Caleda, National Project Manager of the BD Corridor Project, delivered the rationale of the activity and setting of expectations.

Dr. Caleda revealed that among the expected outputs of the orientation training is appreciation of the functionality of PAIS and CWIS in populating and updating relevant information on PAs, caves and wetlands in a centralized online database;

Darwin Tejerero, DENR Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB) Biodiversity Policy and Knowledge Management Division (BPKMD) ICT section chief, gave an overview of what PAIS is and how it works, as well as the roles of PAIS data managers and administrators and the roles and responsibilities of users. James Foronda II of BMB-BPKMD later gave a presentation of the PAIS menu.

Jon Francis Oria of the BMB Caves Wetlands and other Ecosystems Division (CAWED) gave an overview of what CWIS is and how it works, as well as the roles of CWIS data managers and administrators and the roles and responsibilities of users. Oria and Jeffrey Jaymes Mesias, also of BMB-CAWED, later gave a presentation of the CWIS menu.

Participants of the Orientation Training on Information Systems for PAs and OECMs experience first hand an overview and some functionalities of what PAIS and CWIS are and how they work, as well as the roles of PAIS and CWIS data managers and administrators and the roles and responsibilities of users.


The Integrated Approach in Management of Major Biodiversity Corridors in the Philippines or BD Corridor Project is a Global Environment Facility (GEF) funded Project with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) as the GEF Executing Agency and Implementing Partner, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as the GEF Implementing Agency. Project sites are Mindoro Island and Eastern Mindanao Biodiversity Corridors.
